I know this is a bit last minute, but we actually have the time tomorrow due to a schedule change. Miss Kendzicky and I would like to show our 8th graders a movie called The Patriot. We feel it strongly conveys both imagery and emotion associated with the Revolutionary War. The experience will provide students with a lasting memory of the passion behind the events.
Due to some violent war scenes, the movie is rated R. However, we feel the scenes are presented in a way that does not glorify the violence; rather, the pain and suffering and sacrifice of the war are highlighted with the scenes. The characters react to the violence in a way that shows how bad and negative it is.
If you feel it is ok for your child to watch The Patriot tomorrow in class, please sign a printout of this blog post and return it tomorrow. Be sure to write your child's name on the printout.

AR Glossary
ZPD/Reading Range = the reading range where growth occurs without frustration. This range will not necessarily match the grade level.
Points = a point value is assigned to books based SOLELY on the number of words contained in the book. Points do not measure difficulty.
Book Level = the readability of a book. AR uses software to scan every single word in the book and has a precise formula to determine readability. Again, this number does not necessarily correspond to the grade level. Most newspapers are written at a 5.0 level, even though adults read them.
Interest Level = indicates whether a book would interest or be appropriate for a range of grades. LG means 3rd and lower, MG means 4-8, and UG means 9-12. NEW: AR just added a category named MG+ meaning for grades 6-8. MG and MG+ are appropriate for middle schoolers, whereas MG+ books might not be appropriate for grades 4-5.
Average Percent Correct = the average of all quizzes taken for a certain time period. Student goals are tracked based on quarters. They can access their stats by logging into either Renaissance Place or Home Connect.
